Ekphrastic Challenge - Aislinn Langley

Picasso, Pablo. The Old Guitarist. 1904. Oil on panel. Art Institute of Chicago.

The notes fall flat, producing only dissonance
and minor keys.
The fingers that grasp the neck of the guitar are aged
but not yet withered
or without function.

They never lost their ability to make gentle music
but lately,
in this blue room,
this blue prison of the mind,
major keys and happy tunes
are as inconceivable
as a splash of red or yellow.

The notes fall flat.
Trying to think of happier days, of youth, of the sun,
the man is only delaying
the inevitable.

The ceaseless minor chords ease him further
into the deep blue of this cavern
until
backed against a wall,
his music begins to slip from him.

He has reached the furthest corner of this room of blue.
Not afraid, only weary,

he realizes.

The chords ring out in dissonance
Then silence.
