Ekphrasis Challenge- Jacob Young

The Western Wall Painting: Wall PaintingsMatan, Itay. The Western Wall. 2005. Web. 1 Sept. 2015.

Hands running across smooth stone
Emotions sinking down to the core
A blazing sun shines its rays through their tallit
The wall is still standing.

Reflection of all the events of the past
Remembering their ancestors
Thousands of years ago
The wall was still standing.

Hope for the future
Seeing the gleam in their children's eyes
Thousands of years from now
The wall will still be standing.

Roll into dark, roll into light
Night becomes day, day turns to night
Throughout the lifetime of am yisrael,
The wall shall stand.

tallit: a Jewish prayer shawl
am yisrael: the people of israel

  1. Your use of repetition of "the wall was still standing" was effective in that it illustrated the staying power and solidity of the wall. The use of Hebrew words was also interesting, it established a certain intimacy and arcane tone.
