Ekphrastic Challenge- Andrew Collins

Munch, Edvard. Der Schrei der Natur. 1893. Oil.

A twisted and toiled landscape
Filled with agony and despair
And with the screams of a man
Who just couldn't bear

The troubles of life
The passerby ignore
as if they experienced no strife
and their life was no chore

The bridge supported the man
across the agony and despair
but it did not protect him
He was infected by the air

So with a great longing
for a change, for a hope
he let out a scream
but it did not help him cope

  1. Wow nice job. I love the mood, and I feel like it pretty accurately captures that of the painting. The rhyme scheme was used effectively providing a good rhythm, keeping the mood of the poem from being interrupted. The diction choices were great, specifically "twisted and toiled," "agony and despair," and "infected." I like the way you left it unresolved, leaving almost a knot in my stomach. Nice job.
