Emmet Allen

Rousseau, Henri. The Sleeping Gypsy. 1897. Oil on canvas. Museum of Modern Art, New York City.

Please rest

all the choices you had
and all the songs to sing.

Please rest

and we will wait
and ensure that you won't go without.

Sand creeping by,
that geographical nicety
that can only confuse

One attempt alone at
a permanence
and a hovering voice,
embodied only

as if all the identity
could be explained

as if all of the history
weren't alive.

Now rest.
